TRAILER:*

This June, the CSIF $100 Film Festival will be presenting a unique showcase with Sled Island Film called the Film/Music Explosion! The festival is Calgary’s longest running film festival celebrating 18 years this past March, 2010. The CSIF $100 Film Festival is unique in more than it’s staying power and swell of audiences, but in the fact that this festival exclusively screens film on film, reel film, that is 8mm and 16mm reels. The uniqueness to this format exclusivity allows for films with merit and vision to see an audience, several for the first time, and others are well, lifers.

The Film/ Music Explosion! is an annual portion of the $100 Film Festival, where a musician and a filmmaker are paired together to create a short film. In the festival version CSIF showcases three musicians and three filmmakers. The musicians submit their music for consideration and filmmakers listen to the songs, and then submit a film proposal based on a particular piece of music. Three proposals are chosen for production, and they each premiere on a separate night of the $100 Film Festival with live musical accompaniment by the musicians. In the spirit of the $100 Film Festival, all films are shot and finished on Super 8mm film.

For Sled Island Film Festival of Festivals, CSIF will expand the format of the Film/ Music Explosion! Instead of a single band for each separate night of films, they will focus on two bands for a single evening. Each band will collaborate with five different filmmakers to create five original films (ten films in total). However, to add a twist to this version of the project, five of the projects would start as short films with no soundtrack or set dialogue. The musicians would then create a musical (and perhaps narrative) soundtrack based on the images in the film. The other five films would start with the music and have a film inspired by the audio.

So far, bands rumored to be interested in the project are Calgary’s Ghostkeeper, renown for willingness to take on new and exciting challenges in the community. Stay tuned for further details on filmmaker and musician matches.
